Local search visibility

Placement in the map panel returned for searches in the towns you serve, which is determined principally by your Google Business Profile rather than by your website.

Overview

The map panel, and what populates it

A search carrying local intent returns a map panel listing three businesses above the standard results. A substantial proportion of users select from those three and proceed no further. Inclusion in that panel is what most businesses mean when they ask for search optimization, although it is not what the term describes.

The panel is populated from your Google Business Profile, not from your website, and that is accordingly where the work begins: correct categorization, a service area matching the territory actually covered, accurate opening hours, your own photography, and name, address and telephone details recorded identically wherever the business appears.

What’s included

Scope of a local search engagement

  • Google Business Profile claimed, verified and fully completed. Category selection is the single most consequential setting and is frequently incorrect.
  • Service area configured to the towns actually covered, rather than an arbitrary radius.
  • Listings established on the remaining relevant directories, including Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, with identical details throughout.
  • A documented procedure for requesting customer reviews, with guidance on timing.
  • Location and service pages on your own site written as prose rather than as keyword lists.
  • Structured data and an llms.txt file, enabling answer engines to cite accurate information about the business.
  • Reporting in plain terms: whether inquiry volume has changed, rather than a dashboard that goes unread.

Scope and timing

Months rather than weeks, and no guarantees

Corrections to profile categories and listing data can register within days. The elements dependent on review volume and third-party citations accumulate over a considerably longer period, and we would rather state that at the outset than account for it later.

We do not guarantee a first-place ranking, and no supplier is in a position to. Google neither sells placement nor publishes its ranking factors. What is offered is disciplined execution of the factors known to contribute, together with a clear account of what lies outside any supplier’s control.

Frequently asked questions

Common inquiries

Is search optimization the same as a Google Business Profile?

They are distinct, but for a local business the profile accounts for most of the result. Searches with local intent return a map panel above the standard listings, and that panel is populated from your Google Business Profile rather than from your website.

Can you guarantee a first-place ranking?

No, and no supplier can. Google does not sell placement and does not publish its ranking factors. What can be offered is disciplined execution of the factors known to contribute, and a clear account of what lies outside any supplier’s control.

What is a realistic timescale?

Months rather than weeks. Corrections to profile categories and listing data can register within days. The elements that depend on review volume and third-party citations accumulate over a longer period.

Do we need to request reviews from customers?

Yes. It is the highest-value contribution a client can make and it cannot be delegated to a supplier. Review volume affects both inclusion in the map panel and the decision a prospective customer makes on seeing it.

Does this affect visibility in AI assistants?

Increasingly it is the same body of work. Answer engines cite sources that state facts plainly and consistently, so accurate structured data, a profile that matches the website, and pages that answer a question in their opening sentences serve both channels.
